Instead of sketching or making models, I write. That's how work is resolved in my art practice: I write prose, theorise through essays and keep lengthy lists on everything and anything. In fact, most of my exhibitions are first realised in a piece of text before a single artwork sees the light of day.
Making books was the next obvious step. In many ways it was inevitable, given that I grew up at the foot of my mother's bookbinding table in our living room, and spent most days after school playing with my father's linotype machine at the old Government Printery on Tragarete Road in Port-of-Spain, back home in Trinidad.
Based in London with a Caribbean soul, Au Courant Studio is a publishing / practice for articulating these personal histories and documenting the cultural nuances of existing between city and island.
In addition to collaborating with other artists and producing commissioned work, Au Courant Studio produces original artist books, zines, periodicals, and print publications alongside the occasional release of limited-edition goods, all of which are made-to-order.
The work is intentionally slow, the outcomes carefully considered.
Please enjoy.
