NEW RELEASE
A long-form essay with original imagery accompanied by selected things-of-interest, the Studio Diary offers discourse from the POV of the London-based, Trinidadian contemporary artist, Lisa-Marie Harris. Delivered in a slimline zine format, each diary release - like an occasional, printed newsletter - will tease apart a single issue relevant to artistic inquiry, art practice, and living.
"We Need a Break, Too" interrogates what Harris calls the 'economies of exhaustion' and how it tokenizes labour and glorifies hustle culture like a badge of honour, whilst placing the basic need for rest, care and relaxation far beyond the reaches of the collective 'we.'
The essay asks: who exactly comprises this 'we' and why are they denied the right to a break?
How does finding rest become a problem when such a person is also an artist whose creative output often requires them to consistently engage with - and embody - their struggles in order to virtue signal a kind of social responsibility? And how do 'the others' benefit from such actions?
The Studio Diary is copletely advertsing free, artist funded, and studio-produced in limited print runs, by demand.
